Tiered Cupcakes

A tiered cupcake is made from two or more layers. Each layer rests on the lower tier and is attached with frosting or jam. Different sized cupcake pans (mini, medium and large) make it easy to experiment with building unique cupcake forms.

Tiered cupcakes are a great way to mix flavors; just choose different cupcake recipes for each tier. These cupcakes combine vanilla, chocolate and strawberry cupcake and frosting recipes. Each layer is attached with strawberry sauce. Keep in mind you will need two or three cupcakes for every completed cupcake. If using one recipe you might want to double the batch or divide the recipes.

Bake the bottom layers in paper liners. The upper tiers can either be baked in a greased and floured cupcake pan or in liners and then removed. If the design works best with square upper layers, bake them in a square or rectangular cake pan, then cut the cake into squares. Prepare an equal amount of bottom, middle, and top layers.

Frost the lower tier, then frost the sides of the second tier and then the top. Then frost the sides of the third tier and then the top. Frosting the sides and tops different flavors and colors is a playful way to add interest. Decorate tiered cupcakes with toppings.
